Shoemaker’s Bar Grilles offer a versatile range of high-quality commercial supply and return sidewall grilles. These include adjustable aluminum-airfoil blades with signature line marks for high performance, as well as value-oriented fixed-blade stamped steel options. Available in single and double deflection with 0° or 45° blade deflection, the blades can be positioned parallel to either the longest or shortest side of the grille. Depending on the model, Bar Grilles can be adjusted to provide from one-way up to a four-way air pattern. Additionally, Shoemaker manufactures Bar Filter Grilles with 1", 2", or 4" filter depths. Adjustable Bar Grilles are available in single or double deflection. The single deflection option can have blades parallel to either the longest or shortest dimension and can provide a 1 or 2-way air pattern. Q: Is there an overall structure to the names for the 900 Series bar grilles?
A: Yes, please see the below chart to help understand the structure of the 900 Series bar grille names
Q: What kind of damper or air control options are available in the spiral series?
A: The spiral pipe grilles are standard without a damper but are available with an optional opposed blade damper, full scoop, or half scoop. The opposed blade damper (OBD) is recessed screwdriver operated and has blades that oppose each other as they close which provides great air control. The full scoop (FS) is screwdriver operated to lift and lower the scoop which extends the full length of the grille and scoops the air up to flow through the grille. The half scoop (SC) works similarly to the full scoop but does not block the air from flowing past the grille when it is fully open.
Q: How do I know how the blades will be positioned within the 900 series products?
A: Blade direction is defined at the series level, so when you pick a particular series, you are choosing whether or not you want the blades to be parallel to the short or long side of the product. Series where the blades are parallel to the longest dimension are odd numbered: 901, 903, 905, 907, 931, 933, 935, 937, 905FG and 935FG. Even numbered series have the blades parallel to the short dimension: 902, 904, 906, 908, 932, 934, 936,938 and the 906FG, and 936FG. Think “odd long” and “even short”. This rule applies to the front set of blades on double deflection grilles as well: 903 and 933 series products are made with front blades parallel to the longest dimension and back blades parallel to shortest dimension. The back blades will be the opposite direction. 904 and 934 are made with front blades parallel to the shortest dimension and back blades parallel to longest dimension.
Q: Can you help me understand how to specify dimensions when ordering bar grilles?
A: Ordering bar grilles can be confusing, because no matter how you intend to mount the grille, all 900 Series products need to be ordered with the longest side first, for example, 16x8 even if you intend to mount it vertically with the 8” going across. In the 900 series, you cannot order an “8x16”. You would order a 16x8 and then decide which way you want the blades to run and if you are mounting it vertically or horizontally. See diagrams below.
Q: Can bar blades be made in fractional/odd sizes?
A: The 901-908, 905FG (1” filter depth) and 906FG (1” filter depth) are available in fractional and odd sizes and are available as exact ID and exact OD. The 905FG and 906FG in 2” and 4” filter depths, 931-938, 935FG and 936FG are only available in limited, even sizes as well as 25”.
Q: How do I know the screw hole placement?
A: The guidelines for screw hole placement are below. For each side of your product, find the correct dimension range below. That will determine how many screws are in the side, and how they are placed. If you have further questions, please contact Inside Sales for support.
- 28” and under = One screw hole centered
- 29” to 38” = Two screw holes 8” in from each corner
- 39” to 44” = Two screw holes 10” from each corner
- 45” to 50” = Three screw holes, Two screw holes 8” in from each corner and one centered
- 51” to 59” = Three screw holes, Two screw holes 10” in from each corner and one centered
- 60” to 79” = Four screw holes, Two screw holes 8” in from each corner, two more equally spaced

A: No, the flange size is fixed. However, if you need a narrower flange you might look at our Linear Bar Grille series as there is an option for a 1” frame.
Q: What is the difference between the stamped one piece frame vs the extruded aluminum frame?
A: The stamped one piece frame is made of steel, and is available in limited sizes only for the 931-938 series. The extruded aluminum frame has signature lines in the frame, has mitered corners and is available on all sizes.
Q: What is the difference between the steel and the aluminum series (example: 905 vs 935)?
A: The aluminum series (931-938) are made with an extruded aluminum frame and aluminum airfoil blades and are available in a wide variety of sizes and multiple options. The steel series (901 -908) are available with a one piece stamped steel frame (available on certain sizes) or with an extruded aluminum frame, steel rolled formed blades, and are available in limited, even sizes as well as 25”. Round collars are an option on all of these grilles.
Q: What is the difference between 935/936 vs 905/906 and what is the benefits of choosing either one, they look the same on the website?
A: The 905/906 are made with an extruded aluminum frame, aluminum airfoil blades and are available in a wide variety of sizes and options. The 935/936 are made with a one piece stamped steel frame (available on certain sizes) or with an extruded aluminum frame, steel rolled formed blades and are available in limited, even sizes as well as 25”. Round collars are an option on all of these grilles.
Q: Can the OBD damper be field installed?
A: Yes, the OBD can be field installed. Please specify what model you need it for. i.e. OBD-14X6 for 902 series.
Q: Are these durable enough for use in a Gym?
A: Yes, however, you can also order the 901-908 as heavy duty (HD) to make it even more durable. Heavy duty grilles have extra welds on the corners and blades for added strength.
